Grading, Land Clearing & Site Work in Gastonia

Platinum Construction & Crane works throughout Gastonia and the surrounding Gaston County area β€” about an hour and 15 minutes south. Commercial site work along the I-85 and US-321 corridors, residential lot grading, and demolition and cleanup on the older mill-town parcels. We're an owner-operated crew, which in practice means the person who prices your job in Gastonia is the same person running the machine when work starts.

What the Ground Is Like in Gastonia

Gastonia is southern Piedmont β€” deeper red clay, gentler grade than the Foothills, and the Crowders Mountain ridge on the west side where things steepen up. Straightforward earthwork on most of it.

This is the part that separates a job that holds up from one that has to be redone. A quote written off a satellite photo misses shallow rock, a high water table, or the direction water actually leaves a Gastonia lot. We walk every job here before we price it, so the number you sign is the number you pay β€” and so nobody discovers a ledge halfway through a footing dig.

Getting Around Gastonia

We reach most of Gastonia by I-85 (exits 17-22), US-321 and US-74, and we plan equipment access before the trailer rolls. That matters more than people expect: a lowboy that fits the highway does not automatically fit a narrow drive or a tight lot near the Schiele Museum. Areas we work regularly include Gardner Park, Hidden Valley, Smyre and the US-321 corridor.

Being genuinely local also decides response time. When a storm drops trees across a drive in Gastonia, we are not dispatching from another region or waiting on a rental machine β€” we own our iron and we are about an hour and 15 minutes south.

Permits and Local Requirements in Gastonia

City of Gastonia Planning and Gaston County Building Inspections; I-85 corridor commercial work brings full stormwater review.

We handle that process as part of the job rather than handing you a phone number, and we tell you up front if your project triggers a review that affects the schedule. Finding out about a land-disturbance threshold after the machines arrive is how a Gastonia project loses two weeks.

What We Do Most in Gastonia

Site development, demolition, commercial pads, and grading make up the bulk of our Gastonia work, though we handle all eight of our services here β€” grading and excavation, land clearing, concrete, demolition, retaining walls, emergency and storm cleanup, site development, and crane service. One owner-run crew for the whole site means no coordinating between three contractors and nobody to point fingers at when something settles.

Landmarks and areas we work near regularly around Gastonia: the Schiele Museum, Crowders Mountain State Park, downtown Gastonia's FUSE district and CaroMont Regional Medical Center. Whether it's a single driveway or a full site package, every Gastonia job gets a free on-site estimate and an honest written price.

Gastonia is inside our normal service area, so there is no travel charge and no cost for the estimate. Call (828) 764-3306 and we will come walk the property, talk through what the ground actually needs, and put a clear written price in your hands. For storm damage or a washout that cannot wait, we run 24/7 emergency response with a typical 1–2 hour arrival across our radius.

About Gastonia

A Little About Gastonia

Gastonia was began in the 1870s on the railroad; incorporated 1877, named for William Gaston, U.S. congressman and North Carolina Supreme Court justice, for whom the county is named. Gastonia began in the 1870s as a junction town on the Atlanta & Charlotte Air Line Railway after the county seat of Dallas rebuffed rail connections. It grew fast, won county seat status in 1911, and by 1910 had eleven cotton mills. Annexing the Loray Mill doubled the city's size.

Landmarks and historic sites around town include the Loray Mill β€” a five-story, 350,000-square-foot complex with an eight-story Italianate bell tower, once the largest mill under one roof in the South β€” plus the downtown historic district, the Schiele Museum, and Crowders Mountain State Park. The 1929 loray mill strike was the largest textile labor dispute in north carolina history and drew international attention; the mill's name came from its founders john f. love and george a. gray.

Why Local History Matters on a Job Site

That history is not trivia when you are moving dirt. Older communities like Gastonia come with things you only find by looking: abandoned foundations, filled-in wells, buried fuel tanks, field tile, farm dumps, and utility lines that predate any accurate record. Mill towns and rail towns in particular tend to hide old footings and slag fill under what looks like ordinary ground. We plan for that on every Gastonia job rather than discovering it with a bucket.

The local economy shapes the work too. Around Gastonia that means healthcare at CaroMont Regional Medical Center, distribution along I-85, and the FUSE district downtown β€” which determines whether a given week looks like residential driveways and lot prep or commercial pads and parking. We handle both, with the same crew and the same written price.
